How to transform your website into your No. 1 sales tool

Creative | Marketing | Technology

61% of global internet users research products online (Interconnected World).

And 40% of people will abandon a web page if it takes more than three seconds to load (Econsultancy), Makes you think, doesn’t it?

Virtually anybody and everybody is living and breathing the phenomenon that is the world wide web, but (as harsh as
this may sound) I’m afraid not everybody is doing a good job of it.

Company websites are a staple for many organisations these days, but there’s a major difference between having an
online presence and having a site that delivers you results.

Your website is, arguably, the most important sales tool you could possibly have. It’s a way for you to make your
offering known on a global scale. But do you know how to use it to its full potential? Does it provide your visitors
with what they want, when they want it?

As in life, you only get one chance to make a good first impression with your website. In fact, according to Google,
you’ve got just seven seconds to grab people’s attention before they click off to the next site and potentially
never return.

Having a well designed website is central to attracting visitors and getting them to return time-and-time again. How
sure are you that your site is giving off the right first impression? Here are some questions you need to ask
yourself:

  • Is your site easy for people to navigate their way around?
  • Does the content relate to your target audience? Or are you just giving them the hard sell? (Which is more
than likely going to make them run a mile!)
  • Is there a defined customer journey? For instance, do you have calls to action on each page, are they clear
and do they guide your visitors along their customer journey?
  • Is your site mobile
    friendly
? Is it easy for people to view via their smartphones, tablets or other devices? Or are you
hoping your traditional site will appeal to your mobile audience too? (Which is a major mistake to be
making, by the way as traditional sites don’t cut it on mobile devices).
  • As basic as it sounds, does everything work? Are all of your links clickable and do your videos load
properly? There’s nothing more frustrating than seeing a 404 error message flash up on your screen.
  • Is the content well presented? Is it easy to read at a glance and well structured using headings, sub
    headings and bullet points?
  • If your site is an e-commerce site, how easy is it for people to buy from you? Is there a streamlined
process in place or do people have to go through a million and one steps to make a purchase?

Your website can be a top sales tool if you promote and use it to its full potential. Don’t forget, it has
particular appeal for people who would rather browse in their own time than have to deal with a pushy salesman. Look
after your website, put some time and effort into getting it right, update it regularly and it will reward you well.
